Lorde’s version of “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”. Super creepy. Love it. Song makes so much more sense in her version!
Anything that Cake covers. Granted, I’m biased because they’re my favorite band, but they ruin so many originals for me! My favorite? War Pigs.

GUH. John McCrea and Vincent DiFiore do incredible things to me.
If you’re into the punk rock, I love Social Distortion’s version of Under My Thumb. Might be my favorite song of theirs.
Jeff Buckly – Hallelujia:
Sparklehorse – Wish You Were Here:
The London Philarmonic Orchestra – Stairway to Heaven: (REALLY torn on this one… but the movement starting at about 5:45 gets me every time)
Most of the renames from the Sucker Punch soundtrack (These are amazing re-imaginings of these classics):
Emiliana Torrini – White Rabbit:
Skunk Anansie – Search And Destroy
Carla Azar – Tomorrow Never Knows
Bjork – Army of Me
Emily Browning – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Speaking of….
Marilyn Mason – Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)
Smashing Pumpkins – Comfortably Numb
Obadiah Parker – Hey Ya
Johnny Cash – Hurt (duh)
Michael Andrews – Mad World
(can’t find a link)
Tool – No Quarter
Sneaker Pimps – How Do
In total agreement in regards to the Jeffery Gaines cover. I remember hearing it for the first time while working in a restaurant. I remember the entire kitchen going silent to hear the audience respond at the end. Magical.
My choices are:
Rod Stewart’s cover of Handbags & Gladrags (there is fight going on over in YouTube land over which version is better; Rod Stewart vs. Stereophonics. Meanwhile, all the Chris Farlowe fans just hang back and shake their heads.)
Dang…you know what?….I might as well make a blog post out of this because I can’t help myself.
Gotta go…
Not to be redundant…and just off the top of my head.
Aretha Franklin “The Weight” (the Band)
Adele “Make You Feel My Love” (Bob Dylan)
The Weeknd “D.D” (Michael Jackson “Dirty Diana”)
John Mayer Trio “I Gotta Woman” (Ray Charles)
Janis Joplin “Summertime” (technically…it’s an aria)
Iron and Wine “Such Great Heights” (Postal Service)
Sara Bareilles “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” (Elton John) or “Oh Darling!” (Beatles)
Nostalgia 77 “Seven Nation Army” (White Stripes)
Brandon Flowers “Bette Davis Eyes” (Kim Carnes)
Lissie “Pursuit of Happyness” (Kid Cudi)
Ray Charles ‘You Are My Sunshine” (trad. country)
Ancient, but Jimi Hendrix doing Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtowers”.
I love that Civil Twilight cover! Gives me chills every time!
You should give The Civil Wars’ s cover of Disarm by Smashing Pumpkins. You won’t like it at first, but the more you listen, it’s like you’ve never truly heard the song before.
Anything that Pentatonix releases. They make terrible pop songs amazing.
Wagon wheel by Old Crow Medicine Show (Bod Dylan). Darius Rucker’s version is terrible by the way.
Two of my favs:
“Boys of Summer” by The Ataris [vimeo 27669666 w=500 h=375]
“Somebody that I Used to Know” by Mayday Parade [youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftE9uSPpecs?rel=0&w=640&h=360%5D
