Okay seriously WTF

The Inexplicable Traffic Surge of Inexplicableness continues apace. I set a record yesterday for unique viewers– over 300– and as of 6:30 AM already have 120 unique viewers today and 160 page views.  I have never woken up to numbers like that, ever.  And everything’s still coming from overseas, without referrers, and via what appears to be direct clickthroughs to random posts:

I really wish the countries box listed everything; there are probably at least another dozen or so with less than 4 hits, if the last seven days summary means anything.  Of that list on the right, only “On thpoilerth” is from the last couple of days.  And 88 other hits to posts not on that list.

I ain’t complaining, but man, I would love an explanation for this.

  1. My guess would be some of your links have found their way into some sort of aggregator and wordpress is not picking up the referrals.

Anything weird or different about your search terms?

  2. I’m interested to know if this is still happening.

I’m not necessarily seeing spikes, but have certainly been getting some out-of-the-way views this week. Part of that’s the A to Z Challenge. I’m pretty sure I’m seeing the hits from Hong Kong because I chatted with a blogger from there last week.

But I got some from the Russian Federation today.

And oddly, 20 people from Latvia are following me on Twitter. That’s more than either my Alabama or Louisiana followings. But the Latvians don’t seem to be reading the blogs.

    1. It’s ended, rather definitively. I had 969 hits on the day this post went up, which was a record by over 250 hits. The next day I had under 200. Looking at the hour-by-hour ticker that shows up in the black bar at the top of the screen when you’re logged in, everything fell off a cliff at 11:00 PM and stayed that way. I had about 250 today and 80 or so uniques. Still no clue where it came from or why it stopped.

I am nuts enough about math and stats that I’d be willing to pay WordPress for a more robust site metrics package; it’s too bad they don’t offer such a service.

      1. Yeah, I know. I’ve always assumed that if you go premium, you get better stats. Is that not true?

So, it falling off a cliff sort of kills my theory that you got aggregated.

Perhaps you attracted the attention of a botnet, it didn’t find what it was looking for, and it moved on.

Did you get a lot of spam comments during that time?
