Book of the Month is Chuck Wendig’s Black River Orchard, although Adrian Tchaikovsky’s Empire in Black and Gold (Book 1 of 10!) and Alexander Dan Vilhjálmsson’s Shadow of the Short Days were both stellar as well.

It is probably my least favorite of Scalzi’s books, which still puts it at okay, especially since it’s a fast read. Maybe wait for paperback if you aren’t using a library?

I could have gone the library route, but I decided to support my local independent bookshop. It took me a while to get into it because I was getting a “man fails up” vibe, and I am irked that Hera is not the cat on the cover, but when Til pitched Brad the soil techbro into Lake Como, I may have cheered.
I may have to try reading other Scalzi books again. I have failed in the past because I go in expecting blog Scalzi but get novel Scalzi and struggle to reconcile the two.

His two best books are Lock-In and Redshirts, for whatever that’s worth, and the pitch session was my favorite bit of the entire book.

I didn’t comment on the September post in time, but was Wolfsong heartbreaking? Also, I see Josiah Bancroft books on your shelves. Is Hexologists on your list anywhere?

I loved Wolfsong for the first 80% or so and the ending kind of left me cold. I will probably end up picking up the sequels eventually but I’m not in a hurry. I am not familiar with Hexologists; the Babel series isn’t really lighting my world on fire either. 🙂
