Stupid question – What is that?
I’m in Colorado and we don’t have critters quite like that.
They’re cicadas.
How big are they? They look HUGE.
A couple of inches long, maybe. They lay their eggs in the ground– sometimes staying there for up to a couple of decades, then emerge, crawl up a tree, molt into a winged form, and live for I think only a few more days. Some live to lay eggs again. Rinse, repeat. Some are on a much shorter cycle so we generally see them every year but some years are much bigger than others. I see the shells all the time but almost never see a live one.
It’s sort of creepy that you’re posting about these guys tonight. I walked out the driveway to get the mail this afternoon and there sits a giant cicada, just hanging out in the stones. Weirdest thing ever… I too don’t think I’ve seen a live one until today. Just those annoying gross shells.
How ironic. My fifteen-year-old just told me yesterday I was pronouncing it wrong. He was right!

It’s actually quite beautiful in a weird sorta way. However, if I came across something that big I’d probably run and hide lol. Here in the UK we’re not used to flying critters being that big. Although there was a woman who recently found an 8 inch dragonfly in her house! Eek! Possibly due to the hot weather we’ve been having. We’ve had greenbottles this year too and I’ve never ever seen them before!

Wow – very strange looking. I’ve never actually seen one – only heard them. When we moved to the southwest, our first summer was the summer they came to life – the sound was unbelievably loud – even with the doors and windows closed. They are strangely beautiful.
Dude. Nature. I cannot get over the perfection of the wings. And the symmetry. Nice.
