KOKOMO-CON X THIS WEEKEND!

This Saturday, October 12th, I will once again be manning a booth at the 10th annual Kokomo-Con, held from 10 to 5 PM at the Kokomo Event Center at 1500 North Reed Road in, you guessed it, Kokomo, IN. I’ll be in Booth 64, a nice corner spot near the back, with the usual assortment of stuff (I hope. My restock books get here Thursday.)

This is the third time I’ve done this show, and it’s always fun. It’s also currently my last planned show of 2019, although I may find a way to squeeze one or two more in there if something happens to pop up at the last minute.

Tuesday morning I woke up, had a massive coughing fit in the shower, took the boy to school, threw up in the parking lot at McDonald’s while trying to obtain my breakfast, photocopied some crap real quick and went home.

Wednesday morning I got up, assessed the current state of my body, and called in sick to work.

Today I went to work, but I spent most of the day regretting it, and every adult that looked at me told me to go home, and my team said “See you Monday!” as I was leaving my meeting early to go to urgent care.

Urgent care told me rather unconditionally to get a lot of sleep and not to go to work tomorrow. Like, I’ve got the note and everything.

I’m not a huge fan of burning three sick days in September, but that looks like what’s about to happen? And, oh, right, I’ve already paid for Booth 59 at Hall of Heroes Con in Elkhart this weekend. I’m probably not contagious but I already feel like the Monday after a con as is and the con hasn’t happened yet.

So, my attendance is … up in the air, right now, I guess? At any rate the show is at Center Six One Five in Elkhart, from 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday; my understanding is that tickets are reasonably priced. I … well, I’m supposed to be there? So I might be there? I might not? I might show up, and then die!

We’ll see. You should go, though. And if I’m there you should definitely buy books from me because I will be suffering for my art.

Blech.

Day two of the show, and … this isn’t going well. My panels today were fun (in general, I’m finding I really like doing panels) but just like the last time I did this con, all of the vendors are unhappy and attendance seems really low. I mean, I’ve already sold more books than I did in 2015 with all of Sunday left to go (and I spent several hours away from my booth doing panels today) but “better than the show where I sold no books the first day” isn’t a high mark.

It’s 8:09 and I’m ready to be asleep. I’ve got a big-ass book to work my way through but I wouldn’t be surprised if I was asleep by nine.

InConJunction XXIX panel schedule

I’ve got four events at InConJunction this weekend, all on Saturday the 6th. I will be in the vendor room for the rest of the time. For those of you who support me on Patreon, I am very likely to bring a recorder and post these to the site over the next couple of weeks. Remember: just $1 a month gets you access to almost everything on the site, and $2 a month gets you a whole novel!

Independent Publishers on Indie Publishing: 10:00-12:00, Indianapolis Ballroom A

Reading: Favorite Fun Chapters: Sometime during 3-4:00 PM, Indianapolis Ballroom B. I don’t know exactly when and I haven’t decided what to read yet. I think something from Tales but we’ll see.

The Challenges and Joys of Microfiction: 4:00-5:00, Indianapolis Ballroom A.

World Building for Authors and Game Designers, 6:00-7:00, Indianapolis Ballroom B.

I’m hoping for my reading to be near the end of that section, so that I don’t have to be away from my booth for that whole time, and I did end up cancelling one event where I got double-booked by accident and another where I just wanted another hour in the vendor room. Six hours of programming spread over three days would have been okay; six hours of what is usually the biggest day of the con … eh.

Oh yes right it’s the weekend

Missed posting yesterday, mostly on account of spending the entire day with my wife’s extended family, most of whom I haven’t seen in years. I think a lot of their recent get-togethers have been when I was unavailable for one reason or another– especially when I was selling furniture and was working every weekend– and everyone’s kids, who were all little children the last time I saw them, were suddenly, like, people.

So, yeah– it ended up being a fair amount of fun, particularly since the kids of my favorite of her cousins ended up sitting with us at lunch and we were able to bond over gentle mocking of the boy’s Pokemon obsessions. He will go from painfully shy and clingy to the most gregarious kid on the planet once it turns out he thinks he has something to talk about, and he found one of the teenagers who wanted to talk about Pokemon and an adult who was willing to, and he was off to the races.

My wife is back from Boston now, too, and so today was mostly spent either lounging about in the pool or resupplying after the boy and I ate everything in the house over the course of the last week. So, yeah. The weekend went pretty well.

This week will be busy– we’re probably going to the county 4-H fair on Wednesday, Thursday is Independence Day, Friday is my birthday, and Friday through Sunday is InConJunction XXIX at the Indianapolis Marriott East. I’ll be in Artists’ Alley somewhere– it’s small, I won’t be hard to find– and I think I’m doing some panels too but I don’t have my schedule just yet. I’ll keep everyone posted once I know for sure.

On my life of luxury

Now that we are … y’know, pool people, and now that it’s starting to be warm enough that actually using the thing without freezing to death is a possibility, man, this was the right call. It’s still cold, mind you– I actually had to kick the boy out after a while because he lacks his father’s insulating layers of body hair and fat and the shivering was getting to the point where I felt like it was probably kind of dangerous. But man, it has been nice the two or three times I’ve been able to use it this week. Seriously consider getting yourself one of these things if you have a few hundred dollars to spare and some level lawn space, y’all. Life-changing.

My wife is leaving me and heading off to Boston to do work stuff for a week, so it’ll just be the boy and I around here for the next several days. My goal is that the two of us not spend the entire time playing video games. I have actually done pretty well in sticking to the goals I set at the beginning of this week. I’m a little bit behind on the wordcount I wanted, which will surprise absolutely no one, but it’s at least happening. Which is progress, right? Feel free to encourage me to continue by buying a book if you’re so inclined. They’re cheap!

The goal right now is to have enough written by InConJunction in a couple of weeks that reading an excerpt at some point is a viable possibility. I don’t know for sure if I’m going to have a panel schedule or not, but I volunteered for a bunch of them so there ought to be something. I will keep everyone updated, of course.
