What the shit, 1985?

Okay, I had a post in my head, and there were going to be words and punctuation and maybe a laugh or two and a whole bunch of other shit.  Then, for reasons that are not interesting, I saw this video, and now all I want to know is what the shit was going on in the eighties.  Because what the fuck.

Reagan was in office while this shit was happening.  How does that and this even coexist?

WATCH THE WHOLE VIDEO.

          1. You don’t have to click on it because you already know what it is and it doesn’t matter if it’s from Norway because it’s loved right here in the USA. BTW, it was my 13yo who pointed out that the 1985 video was nothing compared to What Does the Fox Say. But, I do want to make clear that I am not saying 1985 wasn’t wacky.

  1. Yessss!!! The shoulder pads, the crimped hair, the hair sprayed into flat surfaces sticking out every which way… this is part of why I can’t stand the intermittent vogues for things like leg warmers, it just brings it ALL back.

    1. So, important question: has our perception of straight masculinity just changed THAT much or was the decade just super gay? I mean, even the rugged beardy Tom Selleck types scan super gay from 2015. EVERYONE was gay in 1985. How did that happen?

  2. Okay, so I loved loved loved the eighties. I carried a purse big enough to hold my can of Aqua Net. I loved Dead Or Alive, The Cure, The Smiths, and several other bands that started with “The.”

However, it has come to my attention that the eighties are returning to us. I see it at the store. Rayon blend fabric. High-waisted “Mom” jeans. Neon colors. Other weird shit that I don’t remember per se, but I know existed on some level.

I am appalled. Shoulder pads. I wore ’em. Crimped, teased hair: Check. Dangly earrings and lots of eyeliner: Check. Acid wash jeans. My God: Check.

It needs to stop. I take it all back. The eighties were ugly. Really, really ugly. And I feel so, so old.

  3. Well 1988 Prince was sporting high heels and hip huggers (later to be brought back and trended by Britney Spears), not far off. Lol and for the record, I was absolutely devastated after finding out Boy George was gay- he was my childhood crush!

  4. Where is my reblog button? Gimme a minute. The internet never sleeps, and don’t expect me to tag it or anything but I saw this video way earlier. And you are right. No idea about the 80s. The 90s, I get. But the 80s still confuse me.

  5. Reblogged this on Just Gene'O and commented:

So. The video featured in this post appears to be going around Facebook. At least the parts of it I haunt. Have a completely unexpected off-schedule reblog.

    And yeah. What Luther said.

    WTF, 80s?

  6. Ah, the 1980s when MTV (for -MUSIC- Television) actually played music! Very funny, I watched this video and scratched my head. It’s kind of funny, a little silly, and the New Romantic look was, well, did we even wonder if these flamboyant front-men were transgendered back then? But I thought it was very, very tame. Music videos had been around for a while, but suddenly they were everything. The bands put a huge emphasis on the visual but had no budget – did you ever see any early Genesis stuff? They didn’t have the budget for a Pink Floyd light show so Peter Gabriel would do these bizarre hair cuts and odd costumes (red dress and fox head, anyone?) to try to make their shows visually different. The 80s videos were like that. They had small budgets but each needed to stand out from the other so they usually opted for silly and flamboyant.

  7. Welp, in 1985 there was no Internet. So the only media was the TV news and newspapers. If you went out to protest for, say, equal rights for homosexuals, the police would just shoot you and the media would report that “police stop communist threat” and that would be that. The only way to protest was to dress like a metrosexual and make a music video.

In essence, MTV was 1985’s YouTube.

  8. What’s with the eye patch? And the nose piercing? And the makeup? This is so random. What the hell haha 😀 It was the year I came into this world so really it all makes total sense now.
