In which I need more sleep

error-404am…and a new mattress, to be completely specific.  The wife and I spent part of the afternoon looking at mattresses, and discovered something interesting:  despite the fact that we cannot agree on a mattress in a store, generally because she wants things too soft for me and I want things too firm for her, when we actually went to the Sleep Number place our preferred Sleep Numbers were only about 5 or 10 apart.

I cannot explain this.  Our current mattress, which we’ve had for seven years, is starting to need rotation far too often, and while a new bed isn’t a huge priority right now it’s bubbling up a bit more often than it used to.  I would like to stop having to take ibuprofen before bed, although that’s less for the jimmylegs than for strictly mattress-related stuff.

Thing is, Sleep Number beds are a bit on the expensive side, especially when you’re dealing with a King-size mattress, which is what we have.  I don’t want to drop that kind of money without at least a couple of people giving me first-hand commentary.

Anybody out there have a Sleep Number bed and want to share about it?

  1. We had the exact same problem! We bought a sleep number bed several years a go and it was even worse. It’s truly like a big expensive blow up mattress. After several years of “sleeping” on it we finally gave in and took it to the dump a couple of weeks a go. We bought a memory foam mattress and we both love it! I strongly recommend staying away from the sleep number bed. My husband and I both suffered worse back pain the years we owned it. The only reason we kept it as long as we did was because of how expensive it was. I wish you good luck on your search for a restful night’s sleep!

We bought a sleep number bed about 10 years ago and it’s still works fine. We really need to replace the entire pump/remote system because we went with the corded remotes instead of the wireless ones, and the displays are shot. Because we have the corded variety, we still have to get a whole new pump system. If we;d had the remotes it wouldn’t be such a problem.

What sold us on it was our numbers being about 20 apart and the fact that there are people who have had the same sleep number bed for 30 years and it’s still working.

Replacement parts are pro-rated against the age of the bed. Most frames work for the Sleep number bed as well as sheets, so you don’t have to by the absurdly expensive stuff from the Sleep Number store.

Overall it was a good investment for us.

  3. Best sleep I’ve ever had was on a rock hard bed. For some reason a lot of Chinese beds are like padded concrete. Worst sleep ever? Water bed. I wish you luck, because these bedding issues confuse the hell out of me too.

  4. I just went through this, and settled on a latex mattress, from ikea no less. The wonderful thing about latex is that it gives you that firm support while feeling soft and plush at the same time. I also purchased a latex topper from foambymail.com. They have the best customer service and are really affordable. You can also purchase an entire mattress from them too. As far as sleep number goes, they’re not really worth it in the long run. When you’re dealing with pumps and air chambers you also have to factor in longevity and maintenance cost/inconvenience. Even if they have a warranty, it’s still an annoyance. Go with latex. A lot cheaper and a lot nicer. Worse thing, get two twin sized mattress toppers, on firm and one plush in order to customize your side. I believe 1 king bed is equivalent to two twin xl mattresses. Once the fitted sheet is over them, you won’t know the difference anyway.

  5. Do you have a Sleepy’s? I’m from PA, so you may not, but they have this wonderful program. You are asked a few questions, and then you lay down on the bed as if you were going to sleep. It measures how you’re sleeping and then recommends beds to you. It was how I found mine, and I have yet to know anyone to lay down on it and not think it wasn’t the most amazing thing ever, haha. It’s a Kings Down, in case you’re curious.

  6. Experienced a sleep number bed just once, at a hotel. It must have had a leak, because I heard the air pump running a couple of times during the night. By morning it was as flat as a punctured air mattress. I’m not tempted to buy one.
