Unread Shelf: September 30, 2025

“That’s not that bad,” you might be thinking. “Didn’t you say yesterday that your unread shelf was going to be unprecedented and absolutely ridiculous?”

Yes, I said that. Look closer.

“I mean, it’s interesting that those are all hardbacks. And it’s weird that they’re all the same size. But a bunch of them are new … wait.”

Sigh.

I’m never getting caught up.

Before

I have a Project ahead of me this weekend. I have taken tomorrow off for several reasons, chief among which is that Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty comes out tonight at midnight. But also because there’s a Big Goddamn Job coming and I’m only looking forward to it a little.

More to come, of course.

Because shit is too serious right now:  you may or may not be aware that my wife’s mother passed away a couple of weeks ago after a long illness.  I alluded to it here a couple of times but I don’t think I ever actually came out and said it.  Do not bother expressing your well-wishes in the comments as I am about to spend this post making fun of my deceased mother-in-law and your sentiments will feel inappropriate.

My wife spent part of her day today helping her dad clean the house out, and in the process of throwing out a bunch of newspapers and magazines somehow came across this.  I am seriously considering getting in touch with the President’s office over at Purdue on the off chance that the letter this is responding to is still in an archive somewhere, because oh my God how batshit crazy must the letter this is responding to be:

Kudos to President Beering, seriously; this is shade of the highest order and I am very impressed.

(NOTE: This was published, obviously, with my wife’s full knowledge and permission.)

What I have waiting for me

Had to pop into work for a couple of hours this morning to deal with something minor that came up.  While I was there I went to check on all the stuff we ordered at the end of June.

I… uh… I have a busy August ahead of me.  Because this is all my problem.  Not pictured: the boxes in the principal’s office and the boxes around the corner from the first picture.

I’m still not going in until August.  Can’t make me.

TERRIBLE DECISIONS: mystery WTF addendum!

That’s hardwood.  From the BEDROOM.  And it is a good 1/8″ higher than the subfloor around it, which is gonna play hell with leveling this mess.

Those of you with a carpentry/contracting background are welcome to speculate as to just why the hell the bedroom’s flooring extends an inch and a half into the bathroom.  I’m hornswoggled.

Terrible Decisions: Redrum edition

…and here’s what’s happening today.  This is after one coat of RedGard; there will be at least one more today and quite possibly two, depending on how well the second coat covers.  You’re not supposed to be able to see the letters on the cement board anymore and obviously the first coat didn’t manage that.

(The pictures are really blurry.  Don’t know why.)

It was determined that this was to be my wife’s job, as I have never been good at painting in any context, and painting with something that had been described as “runny mayonnaise” did not seem like optimal conditions.  (For whatever it’s worth, the texture is more like pudding– less gloppy than mayo– and Bek says it’s been applying just like paint, only heavier.  She’s not been having any problems.)

Next step is tile, although technically once the RedGard is on the shower is fully usable.  God please don’t let me fuck up the tile.  That should be next weekend.
