#AtoZChallenge, Day 5: Elves

EElves are believed to be the race that first gave birth to the Benevolence, and most elves either live in Benevolence space or are actual members of the Benevolence itself.  They are the second-tallest of the five main races, standing slightly taller than an average human but not close to the height of an ogre, which can reach nearly three meters.  Elves are generally slight in build and have pointed ears, but exhibit a wide range of phenotypes otherwise.

The vast majority of elves are considered genderless.  Male and female elves do exist, but gender is viewed with distaste among most elves, even those not affiliated with the Benevolence, and gender is usually considered a birth defect.  Elves born male or female generally occupy the lowest rungs of elvish society if they are even allowed into society at all.

Elves generally use single names, and are known to change their names frequently over the course of their lives.  Very frequently elvish names are related to nouns or adjectives, and often give a hint as to the outlook or occupation of the elf in question. Elves can also change the names of other elves who they hold power over; see the story of the male elf Barren in The Sanctum of the Sphere for more information.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 4: Darsi

DDarsi Tavh’re’muil is the oldest child and first daughter of Rhundi Tavh’re’muil and her husband Brazel.  She is rapidly approaching adulthood and is likely soon to become partners with her parents.  Darsi is mentioned in The Benevolence Archives, Vol. 1 and plays a small role in the events of The Sanctum of the Sphere.  A short story about her will appear in the forthcoming Tales from the Benevolence Archives.

Darsi is intelligent and independent, and appears to be taking after the best traits of both of her parents.  She has a close relationship with Grond as well, who has taken her under his wing as a sort of unofficial apprentice.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 3: Corvix Clan

C

The Corvix Clan is a clan of goblins, based on Arradon, many of whose members work at the resort owned by Rhundi Tavh’re’muil.  Goblins are similar in appearance to gnomes, although goblins are a bit smaller and generally eschew wearing clothing in favor of their natural covering of fur.  Goblins are also strongly clan-based and rarely allow their personal names to be used outside of clan members.  Rhundi’s resort employs at least a dozen members of the Corvix clan, since the Corvix gnome who speaks with Rhundi at the beginning of the short story The Contract identifies herself as Twelfth Corvix.

#AtoZChallenge: First Sunday Supplement: Benevolence

A2Z-BADGE [2016]Because I am just that awesome, I’m doing four Sunday #AtoZ posts involving other parts of the universe I felt needed covering.  Today, you get an extra B!

The Benevolence are the primary antagonists of the Benevolence Archives series.  The Benevolence control the entire expanse of what was once human- and elfspace, and make occasional forays into the territory of the three other main races (ogres, dwarves and gnomes) as well.  Little has actually been revealed yet about the Benevolence’s interests or structure beyond conquest and control, but their spider-shaped warships and their black-armored agents inspire fear wherever they choose to appear.  Magic is generally (though not entirely accurately) believed to be the sole province of the Benevolence, and their technology is far beyond what the other major races have been able to invent.

The Benevolence are opposed by an organization known as the Glorious Opposition, sometimes known as the Malevolence.  The Mals are a loose organization, some of which resembles a traditional insurgent military and some simply prone to piracy.

The Benevolence have seventeen gods.  One of them has recently been making its presence known outside of Benevolence space…

Previously:  Brazel.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 2: Brazel

BBrazel is one of the three main characters of the Benevolence Archives series.  He is a male gnome, married to Rhundi Tavh’re’muil (male gnomes do not typically have surnames) and frequently partnering with the halfogre Grond in their adventures across known space.  Brazel and Rhundi have fourteen children.

As a gnome, Brazel is short, standing only about 1.3 meters tall.  Gnomes are covered in fur, and Brazel’s is a fairly standard medium brown in color.  He is picky about his clothing, with expensive tastes, and has learned to be a fairly talented tailor after years of tearing his clothes during missions.  He is the pilot of the Nameless, and is a skilled mechanic, half-decent hacker, and an excellent pickpocket.  He favors concealed weaponry and prefers to talk his way through difficulty rather than fight– although the constant presence of a halfogre at his side certainly helps him convince others to take him seriously.

Brazel has occasionally been accused of having a bad temper.  This is not a fair statement and the fact that many of the people who have repeated this accusation have found themselves shot soon afterward is unrelated.

Previously:  Arradon.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 1: Arradon

AArradon is the home planet of Rhundi, Brazel and Grond, the main characters of the Benevolence Archives series.  Arradon is a terrestrial planet on the outskirts of gnomespace, featuring a typical variety of biomes but best-known for a region of hot springs that have made the planet a popular tourist destination.  Rhundi owns one of Arradon’s most extensive and popular resorts, which serves as the base for the main characters.

#atozchallenge: Final reflection and blogwanking

a-to-zreflection2015-lgI am, for no clear reason, tired as hell, and have been all week, so the tl;dr here is “That was fun, I look forward to doing it again, and I need to do a better job of driving traffic to it.”

The longer version?  I got the entire challenge written in March, and April was an insanely busy month, and so while I got the thing completed I wasn’t really able to put any energy into visiting other people’s blogs and leaving comments and actually interacting, which is what the Challenge is actually supposed to be about.  It showed in site traffic; while April of 2015 was up over April of 2014 by about 2000 pageviews, it had less traffic than March of 2015.  And the posts really weren’t getting much attention.  Check this out:

Screen Shot 2015-05-07 at 4.59.04 PM

You’ve got to go way down the list to get to the most popular A to Z post.  Anything with an orange bar next to it was written in April.  (That goddamn Snowpiercer review will never die.  Why are people still Googling this fucking movie?)

But anyway.  I know exactly why this happened; it’s because basically all I did as part of the Challenge was write the posts and participate in one Twitter party that just happened to be going on while I was online.  I didn’t really participate in any of the other social aspects of the thing, and that’s sorta supposed to be the point.  So maybe I try and get my spring 2016 book out in March so that I have more time for this.  The writing was fun; I just gotta nail the other stuff down.

(I have seriously been a dead man walking once I’ve gotten home from work all week, dying on the couch or going to bed excessively early.  I still want to review Avengers; I have no idea when I’m going to get around to it, though.  The signing is Saturday; I’m glad I’m already bald or I’d have pulled all my hair out from general anxiety by now.)

#ATOZCHALLENGE, Day 26: Z-Trip

ZArtist: Z-Trip
Best Album: Shifting Gears (I guess)
Best Song: Breakfast Club
This Letter Could Have Been About: Uhhh… Arrested Development did a really good album called Zingalamaduni, but I think that’s probably cheating.

Why I’m Writing About This Artist: For the last, a first: Every individual person mentioned during this project has been an MC, not a DJ.  Z-Trip is the sole exception.  He’s a DJ, and he’s worked with everybody.  He’s also done a few solo albums, and by “solo albums” I mean he’s done Slash-style compilation albums where he produces beats for a bunch of other musicians who rap for him.  I don’t think he’s ever recorded a verse of his own, and if I’m being honest the only reason Shifting Gears is listed up there as his best album is that it’s the one that I own. I’ll stand by Breakfast Club, though, a collaboration with Murs and Supernatural about getting up early in the morning on Saturday and watching cartoons while eating cereal.  It’s fun, and as Murs says early in the song, if you can’t relate to this song, you’re taking shit too serious.

(This was fun.  I look forward to doing it again next year.)
