10 minutes on a Sunday afternoon

I think today was the closest I’ve ever come to telling everyone in the house to head for the basement without an actual tornado warning. The top video is out my front window; I saw the first tree across the road fall almost immediately when the wind started, and missed the second one. My wife saw the tree fall in our back yard (second picture) which is the second time that our neighbors behind us have had a tree fall into our yard, thus becoming, by Indiana law, our problem.

The final picture is from maybe 20 minutes later, rain still falling, as every Hoosier-ass dad in the neighborhood and their dogs went outside to wander around and look at the carnage. I may hop in the car soon and see how the rest of the area looks; supposedly there are a lot of power outages nearby but we’re fine.

Yikes.

  1. Wow. It’s so good that it wasn’t closer to the house. I had a neighbor that had her neighbor’s huge oak tree fall in her house barely missing her middle school son as he sat at his desk doing homework! I’m glad no one was hurt!

    1. As far as I can tell, other than the trees themselves, our fence, and one neighbor’s mailbox, there was no actual property damage, at least nearby. The neighbor with the tree in the bottom picture would have had immense damage if the wind had been blowing the other way.

    1. I am really hard to scare, as far as weather goes. This one had me worried. It only lasted about ten minutes, like I said, but it was ten REALLY BAD minutes. I’ve never seen a tree topple over as quickly as the one across the street did. Apparently they lost a couple of them, so that’s four within sight of my house. Crazy.

  2. When I saw how bad Mishawaka was hit, I thought of you guys immediately. I’m so glad you didn’t lose power and you all are safe. That wind was TERRIFYING; I actually sat with my cat and covered her with my body while it passed. (We had a tornado watch here in Dowagiac but no actual warning.)

And now we all get to do it again on Wednesday! (ugh)

    1. Oh, it went out, it just waited until past midnight for some reason. We are actually at the same hotel we went to last time this happened; I don’t mind cold and dark but I cannot abide cold showers and the CPAP needs electricity. I may end up sleeping at the house tonight anyway though because we don’t want the whole place lit up if the power comes back on early.

  3. Yeah, it got upgraded to a tornado warning and the tornado siren went off. I stuffed the cats in their cat carriers and put them in the bathroom with a blanket over the carriers. Even Fierce Viking Warrior went into her carrier fairly easily*.

Then everything got pretty quiet, so I went back to doing schoolwork, and then I heard this noise** that sounded like the world’s largest sheet of tinfoil being crumpled and I was like “what was that” and then shrugged it off.

The next morning, branches were down, the mailboxes were all akimbo and many were open, and two of the big metal dumpsters looked like they had been moved. One of the white faux wood dumpsters showed signs of substantial damage.

*Only about ten or so minutes of corralling her, amidst much growling and hissing, so something was definitely coming.

** Was this a mini tornado that touched down? I’m from Florida originally, and only have experience with hurricanes. (And hurricane block parties! Whee!)
