It’s away!

tumblr_m7dt1xYWiz1r9g4gho1_400The final version of The Sanctum of the Sphere has been uploaded to Amazon, after taking a personal day from work today to finish it off.  I continue to be frustrated as hell with the process Amazon uses to convert other documents to Kindle files and spent most of the last seven or eight hours struggling with getting the small handful of images in the book to look even remotely correct.  This is made even more difficult by the fact that I suspect their “viewer,” by which you can supposedly see how your document will look on various Kindle-readin’ devices, is buggy as hell.

So you start with a file, upload it, the upload/conversion file process is buggy, the look at your shit to make sure it’s right process is also buggy, and then I guess you just hope the final version looks okay.  I got it as close as I can; we’ll see.  My next book is going to be done in Scrivener, and we’ll see if I have better luck with the final upload process with that program.

Meanwhile, the next step is pulling the print version together, a process that I suspect will actually be easier than creating the ebook, since print is WYSIWYG and there’s not a conversion involved.

The Sanctum of the Sphere is available for pre-order for $4.95.  It releases April 28th.

  1. Yay! I am quite excited to read it. You are next in line after I finish Abaddon’s Gate. Which is thick, but, if it’s like the previous ones, reads quickly.
I hope Amazon behaves for you. Let us know how you like Scrivener.

  2. I pre format with Word then I put the actual ebook together in Scrivener (I couldn’t do my actual writing in Scrivener. Just not going to happen). So far it has worked well (I think so at least!) I hope that Amazon behaves!

  3. I’m sure the Kindle Previewer is responsible for more than a few of my grey hairs. After days of formatting, reformatting and generally banging my head against a wall, I finally clued in that maybe it was the Previewer. I contacted Amazon and they took a look at my Word file and told me it was working perfectly fine. I ditched the Previewer and now use Calibre to convert my word docs to both mobi and epub then test those files with my own ereaders. Super easy to use, safe, free (though a donation wouldn’t go amiss). I uploaded the Calibre-generated mobi file directly to kindle and the Calibre-generated epub file to Kobo without a single problem. Best of luck with Sanctum – great bookmarks.
