But! Seams are mortared and taped and the one piece of cement board that looked a trifle crooked in one corner is fixed. Next step: Redgard!

Don’t worry if you make too much mortar; you can do what our contractor did: pour it down the toilet.
(OK, I felt too irresponsible leaving that comment where an unsuspecting person might read it: don’t follow that advice, you will have pipes with about a pencil width of open space, and will pay a lot of money to a plumber)
