So this happened

…for the first time ever, I have found my books on a shelf in a bookstore. Now, granted, it was the new Half Price Books that just opened on Grape Road, and the book was signed already to someone named “David,” but still– every time I walk into a bookstore I look in the S section just in case somehow magically one of my books is there, and never once has that happened until today. I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again for the sake of completeness: not everyone keeps every book forever like I do, so it’s not a hit to my ego or something that David sold my book off; he may not have liked it or he may have moved or maybe he just generally doesn’t keep books for long; one way or another it’s no skin off my back. But I had a strong enough reaction to seeing my book on the shelf that I had to explain myself to the dude who was standing next to me. He seemed to genuinely appreciate how happy I was about it, too, and gave the book a courtesy flip-through before putting it back on the shelf.

(Which was also kinda weird; I thought about pointing out the obvious, which was that I wasn’t going to worry about it if he put it back, but that might have made it even weirder than it already was. Either way, no buzz-harshing on my end.)

The place is planning on doing author signings in the future, and I got a copy of the manager’s card, so chances are I’ll be doing an event there sooner or later. I will, of course, keep everyone apprised once that comes to pass. Until then, I’m just going to have to go there three times a week until someone buys that book. 🙂

Hall of Heroes Con this weekend! Probably!

Tuesday morning I woke up, had a massive coughing fit in the shower, took the boy to school, threw up in the parking lot at McDonald’s while trying to obtain my breakfast, photocopied some crap real quick and went home.

Wednesday morning I got up, assessed the current state of my body, and called in sick to work.

Today I went to work, but I spent most of the day regretting it, and every adult that looked at me told me to go home, and my team said “See you Monday!” as I was leaving my meeting early to go to urgent care.

Urgent care told me rather unconditionally to get a lot of sleep and not to go to work tomorrow. Like, I’ve got the note and everything.

I’m not a huge fan of burning three sick days in September, but that looks like what’s about to happen? And, oh, right, I’ve already paid for Booth 59 at Hall of Heroes Con in Elkhart this weekend. I’m probably not contagious but I already feel like the Monday after a con as is and the con hasn’t happened yet.

So, my attendance is … up in the air, right now, I guess? At any rate the show is at Center Six One Five in Elkhart, from 10-6 on Saturday and 10-5 on Sunday; my understanding is that tickets are reasonably priced. I … well, I’m supposed to be there? So I might be there? I might not? I might show up, and then die!

We’ll see. You should go, though. And if I’m there you should definitely buy books from me because I will be suffering for my art.

Blog nattery

Been thinking about ways to fiddle with the blog, and one thing that keeps persistently coming up is a static (ish) front page that’s more book-focused and authory, with a link from there to the actual blog itself, which would basically look just like it does now.  You might remember I did a survey a few weeks ago about how people read the site.  I got a decent number of responses to that and discovered that way more people than I would have thought— just over half– of my readers are using WordPress’ reader software to look at the blog.  I’ve hardly ever touched the thing and had the idea that most folks thought it was useless, but apparently either I was wrong about that or people think it’s useless and use it anyway due to some deep-seated cultural disgust with bookmarks that I wasn’t aware was out there.

The good news, though, is that those people wouldn’t be inconvenienced by infinitefreetime.com suddenly being pointed somewhere static, because they’re not visiting the site that way anyway.  In fact, it looks like if I pointed the domain name at a static site instead of the blog, only about 5% of my readers would need to change their bookmarks.

Anybody wanna suggest a theme that would play nicely with that sort of thing?
