Which sin is that again?

tumblr_n1je58xqVI1s8s934o1_500.jpgOkay.

The boy’s at school, for the first time in two weeks.  My wife is in Boston.  I actually have the day to myself to accomplish my own aims for the first time in a while.  I have, so far today, managed to get to the pharmacy and pick up some medication.  That’s actually bragging!  That counts as a thing!

I have at least 10,000 other things to do, though, especially when we consider that I potentially have jury duty tomorrow, and who knows how long that could last.  Trials sometimes take a long time, right?  This means that there are a number of things that I really ought to do my damnedest to get done today since who knows if I’ll be able to get them done during the day at any other point this week.

Then there’s that whole “write fiction” thing I used to do.

And I haven’t been to the pool in two weeks, because of the aforementioned boy’s Spring Break.  I maybe ought to start doing that again soon.

So naturally I’ve spent the morning glassily staring off into space, idly websurfing, and trying to talk myself out of a barnburning politics post that probably is better put off until after New York votes on the 19th.

I thought about trying to see if anyone had streamed a playthrough of Dark Souls III, which might prevent me from having to buy it and then not playing it.  That’s what has counted as ambition so far today.

Good morning, Internet.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 9: Iklis Sniper’s Longbow

IAn Iklis Sniper’s Longbow that he has named “Angela” is Grond the halfogre’s favorite weapon.  An Iklis longbow looks like a technologically advanced version of a compound bow, with limbs that collapse into the body and can be extended with the flick of a wrist.  The bowstring itself is virtual, made of energy, and the weapon generates its own ammunition as it is fired.  The sniper’s variant features a lock-on mechanism that actually allows the archer to hit a target behind cover or around a corner.

How Grond obtained this rare and valuable weapon, and who precisely the “Iklis” are, is a story yet to be told.

#WeekendCoffeeShare: travel mug edition

newcoffee

If we were having coffee, I’d… yeah.  Coffee would probably be good, 1:30 in the afternoon be damned.  I’ve kinda got a headache.  Caffeine may well be helpful.

I slept in an empty house last night for the first time in over four and a half years; since the night after the boy was born, I think.  My wife is in Boston on bidness, and because she left so late last night the boy spent the night at Grandma and Grandpa’s house.  So once I got home after dropping her off, I was alone in the house.  She’ll be back on Wednesday; this will be the first time I’ve been a single parent for more than a few hours at a time since the boy was born.  I’ve left home a bunch of times, but she doesn’t travel often.  I’m not griping– I’m a grown-ass man and I’m perfectly capable of taking care of my son for three whole days while my wife is gone– but it was still weird to be alone in the house last night.  I’ve officially survived the boy’s Spring Break, and have to manage to get him up and off to school on time tomorrow.  Now, that’s usually my job, so it’s not like it’s a new thing, but it’ll be interesting to see how much of a coma he’ll be in when I get him up at “go to school” time and not “Spring Break” time.

I might ask you if you’ve ever had jury duty before.  That’s on the agenda for Tuesday, and who knows how many days after that depending on when the trial is, whether I’m selected, and how long it goes.  I’ve gotten the letter before but I’ve never actually made it into the courtroom.  I’m actually looking forward to the opportunity since I’ve never done it before, but it could have had slightly better timing– in addition to my wife needing to be picked up on Wednesday, we’re having a new washer and dryer delivered, so I’m going to have to do some fancy footwork to schedule everything if I’m going to be in court all day without access to my phone.

Hoping to have some good news on the job front this week too.  I’ve applied for several positions in the last several days that are in the “You have no reason not to call me about this” category, so hopefully at least one or two of them will actually come through.  And that’s not counting the “work for the devil” job that I mentioned earlier this week, which I think I’m going to have to decline for a variety of reasons, some of which are better than others.  Hopefully it won’t turn out to be a mistake.  I’m tired of saying no to jobs; I know I’m not actually being a prima donna about what I do next but I’m starting to feel like one anyway.

But yeah.  More coffee; let’s make this headache go away.  How’re you?

#AtoZChallenge, Second Sunday Supplement: Khkk

A2Z-BADGE [2016]This is the second of my special Sunday posts.  The regular K post will come later in the usual order.

Khkk (pronounced by clearing your throat) is a planet technically on the far reaches of ogrespace, but far enough out that the ogres have made only the most cursory attempt to colonize or name it, although the planet does have a few built cities populated by the known races.  It is technically a terrestrial moon of a gas giant, but is the sole inhabited rock in its system.  Khkk is primarily rocky and desert, with few large bodies of water and only moderate biodiversity.

Khkk’s native race are an insectoid species simply known as the Khkks.  They are unable to communicate other than in their own language, which is a combination of sound, gesture, and pheromone smells, making them very difficult for outsiders to understand without specialized training.

Khkk is one of the main planetary settings for The Sanctum of the Sphere.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 8: Haakoro

HHaakoro is a supporting character in The Sanctum of the Sphere.  One of the few humans to have a role in the series so far, Haakoro encounters Brazel and Grond while tracking a signal emitted by a device that they have been contracted to steal.

Haakoro is in his early twenties, with olive skin and straight black hair that reaches his shoulders.  Little has been stated about his past or background, and he operates on his own, without benefit of affiliation with any organization.  While humans typically have a surname, Haakoro either does not have one or is not interested in revealing it.

Haakoro is brash, impatient, and occasionally rather rude, and Brazel and Grond are not terribly fond of him.  He is also either exceptionally talented, incredibly lucky, or both, and appears to benefit from coincidence more often than anyone ought to, a fact that has not escaped the other main characters in the series.  Whether this represents random chance or some sort of talent on his part is yet to be revealed.

Primal scream (don’t read)

1c96f3844

News on the job front!  I have, once again, had someone contact me with a job offer!  And it pays $37 an hour!  That’s a lot of money!  And it’s a real job this time and not a scam!

A real job that will have unpredictable hours from week to week, have a lot of travel, and end in October!

Okay, there’s a possibility of coming on full-time once the specific project I’ll be training people for is over, but hours will still vary widely from week to week, which challenges my notion of what “full time” means, and the job will still be mostly travel!

GODDAMMIT.

Exclamation point!

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH.

Oh and also the job is literally working for the literal devil.  That’s not a joke.

#AtoZChallenge, Day 7: Grond

GGrond is one of the three main characters of the Benevolence Archives series.  Grond is Brazel’s partner and the co-pilot of the Nameless.  He is Rhundi Tavh’re’muil’s most valued employee, and in fact was working for her before either of them met Brazel.

Grond is a halfogre, standing fully 2.4 meters tall, and has the massive build and powerful musculature typical of halfogres.   A lifetime’s experience as a warrior and pitfighter has left his skin covered in scars, and much of what is not scarred is tattooed.  He is skilled with a wide variety of melee and projectile weapons, but his favorite is an Iklis sniper’s longbow he has named “Angela.”

Despite his appearance, Grond is much more of an intellectual than Brazel, having used his spare time during his employment with Rhundi to catch up on the education he lacked as a child.  He enjoys playing chess and loves reading to a degree that is occasionally distracting.  He has a pair of entirely unnecessary reading glasses that he wears as an affectation.

In the inevitable Benevolence Archives movie, Grond will be played by Nathan Jones, who played Rictus Erectus in Mad Max: Fury Road.  Seriously, make this guy taller, tinge his skin yellow, and slap some tattoos on him and that’s exactly what Grond looks like:

On things I’ve watched lately

Let’s start with this bit of awesome:

You may recall that I wasn’t as enamored as I wanted to be with the first couple of FORCE AWAKENS trailers, worrying that it was going to hit the wrong tone and be too scary for my son– who, incidentally, I’m trying to watch FORCE AWAKENS with as I’m typing this.

This, on the other hand?  This movie, which I would have told you yesterday was entirely unnecessary?

Super fucking psyched.  I mean, there’s not a lot here– it’s a teaser, after all– but what’s in there is awesome.  Maybe Forrest Whitaker is a little distracting, but he vanishes into roles so I’m sure it won’t be an issue in the movie.  The two things I like the most?  The music– we finally have a hint of what a post-John Williams STAR WARS might look like– and the fact that they apparently reached into the past to grab whoever is playing the younger Mon Mothma.  But… yeah.  Right now, I like everything about this.

Mild DAREDEVIL and WALKING DEAD spoilers in the next two parts.  Nothing too huge.

90.jpeg

I was not the world’s biggest fan of the first season of DAREDEVIL– roundly despising the portrayal of the season’s big villain will do that– but I was much, much happier with the second season.  Jon Bernthal as the Punisher and Elodie Yung as Elektra were fantastic, the relationships between the three main characters (Matt, Foggy and Karen) made a lot more sense in Season 2 than in Season 1, and the show was just overall better than in the first season.  I was hoping to get an entire season free of the Kingpin and didn’t, and he was no better in his brief appearance in Season 2 than in Season 1, but I have few if any other complaints other than occasional bouts of silliness here and there and there being way too many ninjas in New York.  If you didn’t watch the first season, you’ll be fine without it (Kingpin was the bad guy.  They got him.  Done.)  and if you liked the first season you really should have seen this already.

I think my feelings about the Season Six finale of THE WALKING DEAD can best be expressed with a panel from the comic:

CfP0pGJUsAEoFA8.jpg-large.jpeg

Honestly, here’s the funny thing: I was really pissed about this when it happened, and now, a few days later, I just don’t care any longer.  They can kill whoever the hell they want; it doesn’t really matter to me.

I suspect that’s not the emotional reaction the show was going for, honestly.
