That’s not true… that’s impossible!

ngbbs4eea41aad0f41School’s cancelled tomorrow.   Again.  The email from the central office downtown was almost apologetic this time, citing difficulties with clearing snow from all the buildings and heating issues in addition to the expected problems with the buses.  The last line was something along the lines of “Schools are expected to be back in session on Thursday.”

I am about to whine about not having to go to work; you may want to bail on this post right now.

Because oh my god I’m losing my goddamn mind over here.  I was expecting today and yesterday to get cancelled; not in a million years did I think we were going to lose Wednesday too.  I haven’t gone to work since December frickin’ 19th and I literally do not remember the last time I left the house.  I am not good at vacation, people, and vacations without clearly defined end points are worse.

(Left aside in all this drama is the very real fact that the end of the quarter is now six days of school away instead of the nine I had previously, that all my kids have an unavoidable math test next Thursday, that they’ve forgotten everything we’ve done for said test over the break, and that they’re not backing ISTEP or the ECAs up just because we had some snow days.  This is about my sanity, not my job.)

I actually miss my goddamn students.  I should be able to slap somebody for making that happen.  Seriously; all I want from life is to be able to get up and go to work like a damn normal person.  That’s not too much to ask, is it?

Aargh.

You mentioned texting with one of your students about a math problem – could you text/email your students a list of problems and tell them that you’re available to answer questions the same way b/c of the test on Thursday? Students who actually DO the problems get a brownie or a pizza lunch or double-plus extra credit something. Will your school allow that?

  2. I’ve got to be careful with text messaging, for obvious reasons, and one of the hard and fast rules that I follow is that I never initiate communication. Hard to accuse me of doing something inappropriate if they’re contacting me. 🙂 That said, the test is *next* Thursday, not two days from now, so I’ve got time to get them back on track– it’s just going to be more challenging than it was going to be otherwise.

Ah, well. Some high schools around here send home extra credit assignments via email. My dad was a Math PhD, so telling him “I don’t have my book to reference” didn’t get me far – He’d sit down and make up a sheet of problems at the dining room table and tell me “here you go. Let me know if you need help.”

    I hated that.

  4. Meanwhile thousands of people go to therapy because they’ve worked themselves too hard. At the same time completely unrelated thousands wonder if they will ever get a job to begin with.

And they told me paradoxes would cause the Universe to fold in on itself…

  5. Haha.. Same here. My oldest is going nuts. My youngest is pissed she’s missing therapy and her french toast she usually gets on the way in. But I am really glad our school district did the right thing and kept kids home. A lot of the kids in our district are improvised and don’t have the gear to be in these temps.

  6. We’re down in Georgia where it never ever gets winter weather. The pipes are frozen solid because they weren’t meant to deal with this much coldness. And neither are the heaters so they don’t really work. And they won’t run the buses because the drivers have no idea how to drive on ice if there were any. Heck even some stores and what nots are closed due to the cold and possibility of driving on ice. Down here, no one is complaining about the school closures. They have no idea how to handle anything below 50F. I’m used to the cold, being from Missouri originally, but my kids are getting stir crazy being cooped up in doors. There’s no snow to play in, and the playground in our neighborhood is frosted over plus the wind is too chilly to really play. We’re stuck inside watching Finding Nemo for the bazillionth time. -_- I can’t wait until my kids go to school (this year my oldest will be in Kindergarten!!!)
