It was this or a bigger house

I have all the books.

Wait.

I worry that what you heard was “I have a lot of books.”

I have all the books. Do you understand?

And, as you no doubt can tell, I have lots of other shit as well. And three other people live in this house! They have stuff too, even though nearly every single object you can see in these pictures is mine. Except the Pokéballs. Those are the boy’s.

This is the second house in a row where we have eventually decided to convert what was supposed to be the dining room into a library. I am absolutely out of places to put shit and I have been reading at a 175-books-a-year clip for the last couple of years. I still have some space on top of bookshelves, especially if I get rid of some of the statues and Legos (and the statues, honestly, may be on their way out soon) but one way or another I’m no more than two years away from needing to pile shit on the floors if something doesn’t change.

So yesterday, fearing an actual intervention, I ordered this:

along with a $12-a-month subscription to Kindle Unlimited. I’m thinking about instituting a rule that any book by a new author gets bought on digital first. Does that mean I won’t get those books in physical form? Not necessarily; as you can tell, I’m not just a reading enthusiast, I’m a book collector, and those two hobbies feed into each other in obvious and terrible ways. There will be books by new authors that I feel the need to own physically. But in most years at least 30% of my books are by authors new to me– this year, right now, it’s actually just over half. Surely this will end up saving me money as well as essential shelf space, right? That Dinniman book on the cover of the Kindle there is in one of those pictures in hardcover– on the white bookshelves, a couple shelves below the Wheel of Time books– but it was free on KU so I downloaded it anyway, to see if I lose my mind trying to read a thousand-page book on an e-reader. We’ll see.

We can’t move. We got our mortgage rate on this house before the economy exploded. We’ll never see this rate again. I’ve got to do something.

Just shoot me

This week has already featured Blowjob Drama, which is not in my top five favorite kinds of drama, and tomorrow is Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is one of the very worst days to be a middle school teacher, as roughly half of the ongoing relationships in the building are going to abruptly end tomorrow, and most of them are going to end in desperately stupid ways for desperately stupid reasons. Meanwhile, I still have to teach math. Which they have even less incentive to pay attention to than usual.

Hooray!

An FYI

For those of you who have followed previous blogs of mine during presidential campaigns: I will not only not be liveblogging tonight’s disaster, I will be as far away from it as I can.

My apologies to the three of you who were hoping I had a stroke halfway through.

More later.

What I Read in 2013

UnknownIf you’ve been reading for a while, you know this already:  at the beginning of this year, I decided to keep track of everything I read in 2013.  This started off just as a curious exercise; I am a data nerd by nature, and I like keeping track of things.  However, at some point it became clear that I had a good chance of reading 200 books in the year– at which point the list became about reading 200 books this year, and became some sort of odd running contest with myself.

At any rate, once I finish The Return of the King today– probably within an hour of the end of this post– I’m going to start Gone with the Wind, which is over a thousand pages long and thus will probably take me through to the end of 2013, if not much longer than that, since I’m on vacation and all.  Gone with the Wind will be the 201st book of the year.  This doesn’t count articles, comic books, short stories, and a whole host of other things; while I left my definition of “book” rather vague– basically, it had to be either a novella-sized ebook or something that was bound to qualify, which meant comic issues didn’t count and neither did short stories– amazingly, the 201 books only represents a fraction of the reading I did this year.

I, uh, like to read.

Some numbers:  before you look at some of the titles and accuse me of cheating, know that the books averaged 331.621891 pages each, which I feel is a respectable length.  The longest book on the list will be Gone with the Wind; the shortest, Batman: the Killing Joke.  The shortest that wasn’t a graphic novel was the 89-page Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, way back in January.  I read a total of– whoa, weird– 66,656 pages in 2013, which is an average of 182.619178 pages every single day, all year long.  65 of the 201 books were rereads; the rest were new to me.  I choose to not attempt to figure out how much I spent on the 136 new books.

I will not, by the way, be doing this again; I suspect in a regular year where I’m not pushing myself to finish stuff and paying attention to numbers I probably read around 150-175 books a year, and my plan for 2014 is to mostly read huge books, so the number will be even smaller than that.

At any rate, here’s the list.  Hopefully this will paste in a format that’s actually readable:
