In which I forgot to title the post again
Only one cosplay photo to share today, but it’s a doozy– I don’t think I’ve ever seen a Hagrid and this dude was born to cosplay him. If you look carefully you can see he’s got lifts attached to his shoes but even without them he was a mountain of a human being.
I wonder what it’s like, to be a cosplayer and to realize that you already basically look exactly like a certain character and are perfect to cosplay as that person.
At any rate: I am home, and only about half-dead, and in my recliner, and I wore earplugs for the entire drive home because the Goddamned crashwrap they put on my window was so unbearably loud. Insurance is covering the loss 100%; I have decided to pretend I just lost the sunglasses (which I rarely wore anyway) rather than trying to pursue whatever I might need to do to get some sort of reimbursement for them.
I have about fifteen blog posts percolating about in my brain right now; we’ll see how many of them get written over the next couple of days, or whether I wake up tomorrow with the vague feeling that at one point I had a bunch of blog ideas and now they’re all gone. I do intend to talk about the con in more detail; for now, the fun parts were fun, the not-fun parts were at least interesting, and I’m not sure yet whether I’ll return next year or not. But again: more later.

Again, not a ton of pictures today, but I suppose not-a-ton is better than the none I took yesterday, right?
(Note the complete lack of superheroes. There have barely been any! This has been a very different crowd than I’m used to seeing at these things; I’ll get more into that tomorrow, maybe.)

In which I’m a bit of a dick
I accidentally said “Have a nice weekend!” to at least two or three different people today at various points, confusing the hell out of at least one student, and when I skipped out of the office (more or less literally) saying “See you Monday!” to everyone, I did it knowing full well that because I am going to be out of the building for three days I will probably end up with six days’ worth of catching up to do once I come back. So the last laugh is sure as hell gonna be on me.
It’s been a hellishly busy couple of days, but busy is all it has been, and busy I don’t really mind. I’m good at busy. Of course, I’m gonna stay that way for good chunks of the next several days, and they seriously think I’m gonna be in Indianapolis at 8:00 in the morning tomorrow, too, which would be a hilarious joke if motherfuckers weren’t serious. So things might be a little light around here for the back half of the week, but I’ll make up for it with cosplay pictures after the con.
My copies of CLICK are supposed to show up tomorrow, which is good, because tomorrow is pretty definitively before the con, but it’s also bad because I’ll already be gone before they get here and I won’t get to hold or touch the precious before I see them when my wife brings them to me Friday night. I’ll need to decide how much I’m selling them for, too, once I actually see them.
…damn, I need a new price board.

Hall of Heroes Con: Day 2
Not bad! 35 books sold over two days– not enough to leave a box behind but almost. Made my booth back and then a decent chunk of change besides and actually sold out of some of my titles for the first time ever. And I met Svengoolie, which I might talk about a little bit some other time because my reaction to doing so kind of fascinated me.
But we know you’re here for cosplay, so let’s get to the pictures. One of the individuals photographed below could etch glass with his or her own nipples. And it may not be the one you think it is! As always, click for bigger:
Hall of Heroes Con, Day 1
That … went well. I have already paid for my booth and then some, so tomorrow is going to be all profit, and since tomorrow doesn’t feature a home Notre Dame game at 3:30 (at which point traffic conspicuously dried up) I have high hopes that it could be even better a day than today was. That would be quite nice.
Also interesting: every con I’ve ever attended has had celebrity guests of some stripe or another, but other than Timothy Zahn coming to the booth next to me I’ve never really interacted with any of them. Seth Gilliam, Katrina Law, Kevin Sussman and John Schneider all walked past my booth several times, and it’s possible that William Katt did a few times too but I don’t actually know who he is so I didn’t recognize him.
(Seth Gilliam, in particular, is a ghost. The first couple of times he walked past I was the only one who realized who he was. I almost called him over to the booth the first time, thinking he was just a regular con-goer, and only stopped myself at the last second.)
Not as many cosplay pictures as I usually take, mostly because the one real disadvantage of my booth is that it’s not in a great place to ask people to stop for a picture. Every time I tried it led to a traffic jam, so I stopped doing it after a while. That said: enjoy, and remember you can click on the pictures to get a larger version!
Hall of Heroes Con this weekend!
BEHOLD: My booth, such as it is. I generally take pictures after I’ve got myself set up but it clean escaped me to do so until after I’d covered everything up and gotten ready to go, so have a picture of a table with a black cloth on it! There are books and shit under there! Exciting!
The Hall of Heroes Con is in the Lerner Theater and the surrounding area in scenic downtown Elkhart, Indiana. I’m in booth H4, which is basically immediately outside the main vendor area on the second floor. I’m of two minds about the space; on the one hand, virtually everyone who goes into the vendor hall is going to walk right past my booth, but on the other hand it’s kind of at the end of a hallway and people will walk past me as they’re walking out of the main vendor area– so hopefully they won’t have spent all their money already.
I will, of course, post as many cosplay pictures as I’m able to take; I heard from the main organizer dude that they’re expecting about 15,000 people over two days, but the weather forecast is set to “Noah,” so hopefully that won’t depress turnout any. But one way or another, I’ll be there from 9 to 6 tomorrow and from 9 to 5 on Sunday! With Oreos! Come on out!
