In which I lie, probably

The next two days are going to be insanely long. Get to work at 7:30, teach all day, then a break of about an hour, then parent-teacher conferences from 4:30 to 7:45 on both Monday and Tuesday, meaning I won’t be home until probably 8:30 or so each day, at which point I will collapse into bed and attempt to die. Wednesday will be an e-learning day but the morning is still available for more parent-teacher conferences, although from what I’m told the Wednesday hours are generally very sparsely attended.

I am genuinely hoping that most of my students skip school for the next couple of days, because I cannot imagine the deficit of patience I will be working with by the end of the day on Tuesday, in particular, and bloggery before Wednesday evening seems … unlikely.

Which means I’ll come home both days and write a thousand-word essay, no doubt.

Quick note tonight

It’s not like I’ve been writing at length lately, but I had two hours of parent/teacher conferences tonight, not as the teacher but as the parent, and while none of my kid’s teachers had anything especially surprising or bad to say about him, shit, that was exhausting.

I have had a number of post ideas rattling around in my head this week that haven’t made it to the screen yet, and honest to God as I’m sitting here right now the only one I can remember is one I definitely don’t want to write tonight. The Algebra kids did not do well on their test today, which took me quite a lot by surprise, and I’ve completely rearranged the next few days as a result; I’m giving them the test back ungraded on Friday and we’re going to go over every single question as a group, and next Thursday they’re going to take another test. It’s going to be the same as this one, but with the numbers changed; I am hoping with a couple of extra days of preparation and with absolutely no ambiguity about what they’re getting into I will see a better result. The rest of my classes will spend tomorrow either frantically trying to bring their grades up on what may as well be the last day of the quarter or demonstrating why they have the grades that they have. Hopefully more of the former than the latter; we’ll see.

In which I don’t know if that was worth it

Parent/Teacher conferences tonight. I have 73 students. We had two and a half hours for conferences. Eight parents showed up.

I know I’ve been making a thing lately of “I’m tired and don’t feel like blogging tonight,” but I feel like I’ve earned it today more than usual, what with not getting home from work until 8:00. I still have to go in tomorrow, of course.

In which that’s enough of that

So here’s the thing about the con I just did: I like all the people who run it. For the most part, I liked all the other vendors I talked to. I really enjoyed the panels I did; they weren’t heavily attended, but it turns out if you put a bunch of authors in a room and tell them to yap about something we’re perfectly happy just to talk amongst ourselves for a while even if there aren’t a whole lot of people there to listen.

Actually, true story: one of my panels was scheduled against the charity auction, which was heavily attended, and as a result there was literally no one there when our panel was supposed to start. The four of us just got to talking about microfiction anyway. Eventually one person showed up and joined the conversation. We did some readings, just for the hell of it. We had one person attend and it was the best panel I did, and I didn’t record it because I didn’t think it was going to last an hour– and somehow it did.

So, yeah, I’m not going back.

And, like, it’s weird– I like these people, and I had fun, and I’m not even going to use the name of the con in this post specifically because I don’t want anyone connected with the con finding it by accident, because this isn’t their fault. It’s not a poorly run show, but this is a small show, and the majority of my sales over the weekend were to other vendors, which is practically unheard of– and there were long stretches of time, especially today, where I didn’t see anyone in the vendor room who wasn’t a vendor. That’s not sustainable. It’s just not.

And the people who do show up for this con tend to do all of the cons in the Indianapolis area, which means I’ll catch them at some point at some other show. I recognized easily 50% of the folks who walked past my booth on Friday. There was a guy who was a booth barnacle from Hell for both of the people on either side of me who was at ConGlomeration in Louisville, and I’m pretty sure he was at the last one of these cons, and when I’m recognizing even the people I don’t want to see again? Sigh.

It’s just not worth it to me as someone who at least hypothetically wants the chance to make some money at one of these damn shows. And, of course, the flip side of that was the couple of people who did buy something from me at the last show, remembered me, and bought more books– I love that. It’s a wonderful feeling. But I spent $90 on my hotel room last night and sold two books today, for an amount of money that did not cover my breakfast and lunch today.

And … yeah. I’ve still got two or three more shows coming this year– and I had to cancel two because of the family stuff I’ve been going through in the last couple of months– but I have to start being a lot more selective about which shows I go to, and this one just can’t make the cut again. I’m not happy about it, but I don’t think I have a choice.

… Fuck daylight saving time, is the lesson you should be drawing here. Also, first floor room. So please do not figure out where I am and come stare creepily into my window.

Oh, and the books haven’t shipped yet, either.

What we need … is a video

This is probably the single most self-indulgent thing I’ve ever done in this space, so please, forgive me, but: we’re vlogging tonight.

I’m so very sorry.

Rainy, but the room is nice! And the first day of the conference was not a waste of my time. I’ll take it.

In which I’m a bit of a dick

anigif_enhanced-20852-1426754886-2.gifI accidentally said “Have a nice weekend!” to at least two or three different people today at various points, confusing the hell out of at least one student, and when I skipped out of the office (more or less literally) saying “See you Monday!” to everyone, I did it knowing full well that because I am going to be out of the building for three days I will probably end up with six days’ worth of catching up to do once I come back.  So the last laugh is sure as hell gonna be on me.

It’s been a hellishly busy couple of days, but busy is all it has been, and busy I don’t really mind.  I’m good at busy.  Of course, I’m gonna stay that way for good chunks of the next several days, and they seriously think I’m gonna be in Indianapolis at 8:00 in the morning tomorrow, too, which would be a hilarious joke if motherfuckers weren’t serious.  So things might be a little light around here for the back half of the week, but I’ll make up for it with cosplay pictures after the con.

My copies of CLICK are supposed to show up tomorrow, which is good, because tomorrow is pretty definitively before the con, but it’s also bad because I’ll already be gone before they get here and I won’t get to hold or touch the precious before I see them when my wife brings them to me Friday night.  I’ll need to decide how much I’m selling them for, too, once I actually see them.

…damn, I need a new price board.

More to do!  Hooray!

I’ll post a hotel view picture tomorrow.  Behave, y’all.
