#ATOZCHALLENGE, Day 17: Queen Latifah

QArtist: Queen Latifah
Best Album: All Hail the Queen
Best Song: Ladies First
This Letter Could Have Been About: Q-tip, A Tribe Called Quest

Why I’m Writing About This Artist: Honestly?  Watch the video first.  That’s why I’m writing about Queen Latifah.  Queen Latifah wasn’t the first female rapper, or the most talented female rapper (she gets upstaged by Monie Love on Ladies First, her best song,) but what she indisputably was was rap’s first and most outspoken feminist.  She may still be rap’s most outspoken feminist, actually.  Throw in a heavy dose of pro-blackness and African nationalism (check out the cover for All Hail the Queen) and the lady would have been a force to be reckoned with even if she hadn’t had tons of talent.  By now she’s got a Grammy and an Oscar or two and has taken over every medium she’s ever worked in, so she’s got nothing left to prove.  But hiphop had her first.

In which I’ve been keeping secrets

Screen Shot 2015-01-12 at 22.14.14Periodically I do an experiment with book prices somewhere and don’t overly publicize it just to see what happens.  As it happens, Skylights has been on sale at Amazon for 40% off for close to a week now, and sometime late tonight before I go to bed I’ll roll it back to its regular $4.95 price.

But until then, if you haven’t picked it up yet, and a $2.99 price point appeals to you?  Go for it.

#ATOZCHALLENGE, Sunday Supplement 3: Missy Elliott

A2Z-BADGE-0002015-LifeisGood-230_zps660c38a0Artist: Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott
Best Album: This Is Not a Test
Best Song: Get Ur Freak On

Why I’m Writing About This Artist: Because, ridiculously, of Katy Perry and the Super Bowl.  Because discovering that Missy Elliott had been part of the Super Bowl halftime show made me regret not watching the Super Bowl.  Because that third video down there is staged, but is still how everyone who was listening to hiphop in the mid-to-late nineties reacted upon learning that Missy Elliott was in the Super Bowl.

“Wait.  Is that–”

“No way.”

“That’s Missy Elliott.”

“No fucking way.  God does not love me that much.”

“That’s Missy Fucking Elliott.”

And then, all at once, everyone in America yelled the same word at the same time:

“HOLLA!!!!!!!”

We done forgot, y’all.  Never again.

(Do not sleep on the video for The Rain.  Yes that is a motherfucking trash bag she’s wearing.  And she rocks it.  Because she’s Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott, and don’t you ever forget it again.)

(Also: there’s a fun little visual reference to Ol’ Dirty Bastard during the Super Bowl clip.  See if you can find it.)

On th’ pitcher shows

You remember when your grandpa used to call movies that?  And it was a weirdly redundant phrase, but also oddly comforting?  I miss pitcher shows.

Anyway.  You’ve seen this already:

I had a few things to say about the first trailer, both right after I saw it and after I had some time to think about it.  My main concern, right now, is that the movie’s going to end up being a bit too scary to take my four-year-old to, and taking Kenny to see this movie is literally the main reason I want to see it.  That image yesterday wasn’t a joke.  Now, most of the scary scenes seem to be confined to John Boyega’s Finn character, so I’m hoping that it’s just a few bits from early in the movie.  But look at this:

starwarstheforceawakens_teaser_trailer2_12The bloody handprint– or at least what looks like one– on his helmet has me a bit nervous.  This is a series that managed to burn three characters to a crisp and cut off multiple limbs without getting bloody.  I’m not making doom and gloom proclamations, mind you– it just makes me a teeny bit less likely to take my son to see it.  It’s not going to affect whether I do.

(Note: I don’t know whether Finn is in costume for these bits or if he’s actually a Stormtrooper.  I kinda like the idea of a main character being a former Stormtrooper.)

On the good side, and this isn’t in the trailer, there’s this:

bxmdt8benisztvuoxsid

This is the hilt of Kylo Ren’s cross-guarded lightsaber, which caused so much kvetching when the first trailer came out.  I was not happy with the new look for the lightsaber blade (not the crossguards, the blade itself) and said that I’d drop my objection if there seemed to be a story-based reason why the blade looked different.

That saber hilt looks like it was put together by an amateur.  And I note that Kylo Ren’s name does not include the word Darth.  Therefore: objection dropped.

Everything else about the trailer?  Gold.  I’m not super keen on the idea of the Empire and the Rebellion being renamed the First Order and the Resistance, but I’ll roll with that for the time being and it’s not in the trailer anyway.  But yeah, I’m a lot more psyched about this film now than I was for the first teaser.

On the other hand…

Nope.

Noooooope.

One of these days they’ll make a new Superman movie.  Hell, one of these days they’ll make a Batman movie; they haven’t made one of those in like two decades or something.  Make all the movies you want about Angsty Alien No Moral Core Raised by Assholes Dude and Snarling Ninja Bat-Costume Dude, but stop calling those two “Superman” and “Batman.”  Wild fucking dogs couldn’t drag me to see this shit.

(“But, Luther, you were down on the new Star Wars before the second trailer came out, and you seem to have changed your mind!  What makes these different?”)

The entirety of the Nolan Batman films and the horrid piece of shit that was Man of Steel.  Ain’t nothing gonna change in this one.

(“How dare you judge an entire movie on a two-minute trailer!”)

Can we change the subject for a sec and talk about how fucking stupid this is as a line of argument?  Trailers literally only exist to make people want to see things.  They exist to make people judge movies.  They’re put together by the same people who put the movies together.  It’s bullshit to say that you can watch a trailer and go “I want to see that!” but it’s somehow illegitimate to see a trailer and (backed up by the last four entire movies by these idiots) claim that you think it looks like a piece of shit.  And this movie looks like a piece of shit, and is a sequel to a movie that was a piece of shit, and there is no indication that anything has changed.

(“But what about Aquaman?  And Wonder Woman?”)

Okay, Aquaman looks awfully cool and fuckit I’ll be honest by awfully cool I mean amazingly hot:

tumblr_nk2exxju4t1tnt8s9o1_1280That said?  This whole design is more of the what am colors? nonsense that both of these franchises are draped in, and frankly the inclusion of the characters just makes me think the movie is gonna be unwieldy and overstuffed in addition to depressing and stupid.  Be honest: would you really know this was supposed to be Wonder Woman if no one told you in advance?:

Totally something I wanna spend ten bucks on.

(EDIT:  Just saw this.  How infinitely better is this?  Way infinitely better.)

#ATOZCHALLENGE, Day 16: Proof

PArtist: Proof
Best Album: Searching for Jerry Garcia
Best Song: Kurt Kobain
This Letter Could Have Been About: Public Enemy, PM Dawn, Paris, Professor Griff, Parliament Funkadelic, Puff Daddy

Why I’m Writing About This Artist: Proof only released one album to my knowledge– certainly only one major release– before he was murdered in 2006.  He was one of Eminem’s closest friends, and Em’s tribute song about him follows the video for Kurt Kobain.  He was also supposedly the inspiration for the character of Future in the film 8 Mile.

The thing is, Searching for Jerry Garcia is a brilliant album.  I mean, hell, just the title lets you know right away that you’re in for something different– who the hell references the Grateful Dead in a rap album, much less ends the same album with a song about Kurt Cobain?  I wish to hell I’d seen more music out of this guy; he was lost far, far, far too soon.

In which oops I forgot something

I also, in my first act of the day, seconds after walking into my office, had to have a parent/teacher conference with a parent whose son had been suspended for two days for stopping outside of a classroom full of girls, blatantly and obviously scratching his balls, and then loudly announcing that he had crabs.

Mom told me that the reason his crotch itched was that he’d been wearing loose shorts yesterday and working in the yard, and there had been issues with mosquitoes.

It is April.  I do not believe this story.

But the conference was hilarious.

I can’t tell if this story is sad or funny

11138588_10206547522310491_2102370222246627824_nAnd the answer may very well be “both.”

(There is another Star Wars post coming.  Soon, I expect.  This will not be that post, but I could not pass up this image.)

A couple of months ago one of my sixth grade boys attacked me in the office.  I didn’t mention it here.  It wasn’t a big deal.  The kid was in the midst of a massive emotional meltdown and he has trouble controlling his temper on the best of days.  I wasn’t mad.  We had to put him up for expulsion, but when a kid’s special education disability can be found to have caused the behavior that led to an expulsion, that kid is frequently sent directly back to school and everyone involved knew that that was exactly what was going to happen and it did.

(I understand that this policy may prove controversial.  I’m not super interested in defending it or denigrating it at the moment.  It’s just how things work in our current system.  Roll with it.)

At his expulsion hearing, I went over what had happened and spent a few minutes talking with the kid about things he could have done to make the situation work better.  I made it very clear to both him and his mother that if he’s in a situation where he feels like he’s about to lose his temper, I want him to come talk to me if he needs to, and that under most circumstances my office door is going to be open to him whenever he needs it to be.  Since he came back, I’ve checked in with him on my own two or three days a week, and he’s been referred to me once or twice a week as well.

Basically what I’m saying is I see this kid every day for one reason or another, and I spend a fair percentage of my copious spare time talking him off of ledges.  But!  He hasn’t gotten into a fight or hit anyone since he came back.  In fact, to the best of my recollection he hasn’t even had a day of home isolation since he came back.  This represents incredible progress.

He needs a name.  We’ll call him David.

So today I got a phone call from one of the special ed teachers that David had been sent to her room by another teacher on a time-out and that he was insisting on talking to me.  I went to the classroom and found him in the hallway about halfway to meltdown mode– hands clenched into fists, breathing heavily, pacing around, the works.

I got the story out of him fairly quickly, and this is the part where telling this story gets a bit difficult, because I don’t quite know how to describe this other boy, who we’ll call Jonathan.  Jonathan is probably gay.  He certainly acts the part; he’s noticeably effeminate and he plays up his effeminacy (is that a word) to a degree I have literally never seen from a twelve-year-old before.  He gets picked on by the other kids from time to time, which will surprise no one, but what may surprise you is that we’ve had to deal with him for sexual harassment issues before.  For example, we had a big fooferall on Monday just this week because Jonathan was blowing kisses at several of the other boys in the room– a fact that they did not react to with calm equanimity.

Put the pitchforks down.  As I’ve said many, many times, bullying is an infinitely more complicated issue than society is ever willing to admit, and frequently what people might want to point at and screech “bullying!” is actually a situation with multiple bad actors.  This is absolutely one of those situations.

At any rate, David has gotten into an argument with Jonathan, and rather than punch Jonathan in the face he’s left the room, gone somewhere else, and asked to talk to me.  He’s upset with Jonathan because he doesn’t like “that gay stuff” and blah blah blah garden-variety middle-school homophobia.  Am I happy about it?  No, absolutely not.  Am I willing to pass over GVMSH because at this precise moment with this precise young man right now we’re working on don’t punch people in their faces, a lesson that he seems to actually be learning?  Yes.  Yes I am.  Judge me as you see fit.

I get a description of what has happened out of him.  As it turns out, what specifically set him off was Jonathan telling him, loudly, in class, that he was going to “do a booty porn” with him.

You read that right.  Booty porn.  David does not want to be in a booty porn!  In fact, he quite badly wants to punch the faces of those who suggest that he should be in booty porns.  But he has been told not to punch faces, so instead he left the room.

I deposit David in the office, tell the office to sit on him and let him calm down for a few minutes, and go find Jonathan.  I have a problem here; I can calm David down easily enough, especially given a few minutes.  What I can’t do is put him back in the classroom with this kid, and if Jonathan really suggested he was going to fuck this boy in the ass and videotape it– because hell if I can figure out what else “do a booty porn” might mean– then we’re right back to sexual harassment issues from Jonathan, and my day, much like an erect penis, has just gotten longer and harder.

(I’m very sorry.)

I talk to Jonathan in the hallway.  A bunch of the boys realize immediately why I’m there and a bunch of hands shoot up from kids who want to tell me what happened.  I wave them off.  Jonathan comes outside.  His story is largely the same as David’s in terms of the mutual harassment and name-calling that started the dispute, and then he says something that stops me dead.

“I told him I was gonna do a bully report, and then he got mad and left the room.”

Say “bully report” a few times really fast.  Now say “booty porn” a few times really fast.

oh what the hell am I doing with my life.

Now, here’s the thing: Jonathan is just clever enough that he could be lying.  And David, as much as I like the kid, is just volatile enough that he could have put the worst possible spin on what he thought Jonathan was saying.

Do you see where this is going?

I had to pull, one by one, and at random, about half of this poor teacher’s class into the hallway, to ask them if they heard the words bully report or booty porn.

The results?  50/50.

And then I had to go talk to my boss, and say the words booty porn to him a bunch of times, and explain to him why I was resigning immediately and refusing to deal with any of this nonsense any longer.

The end.

#ATOZCHALLENGE, Day 15: Ol’ Dirty Bastard

OArtist: Ol’ Dirty Bastard
Best Album: Return to the 36 Chambers
Best Song: Shimmy Shimmy Ya
This Letter Could Have Been About: No one. Absolutely no one.

Why I’m Writing About This Artist: I don’t know how to write about ODB.  The brother was an insane, drug-addicted, criminal hiphop genius.  There’s three videos attached to this post– the first for his best solo song, Shimmy Shimmy Ya, the second a few clips from an episode of Yo! MTV Raps where he was famously blasted out of his mind but that kinda shows some of the crazed energy that the man had with him pretty much at all times, and the third is actually a Rhymefest song from well after he died that I still really enjoy listening to from time to time.  ODB died of a drug overdose in 2004, just short of his 36th birthday, and spent most of his career getting arrested and locked up for dumb shit.  I have no idea what he could have been had he gotten clean, and he may well have been one of those artists who wouldn’t have been able to function if he had ever gotten clean.  But … shit, the man was a lunatic genius as it was.  Genius.  There’s not a single track on Return to the 36 Chambers that isn’t amazing in one way or another, and I’ve written all of this without even mentioning the Wu-Tang Clan.  RIP, Big Baby Jesus.
